In 2785, the first of the Succession Wars raged across the Inner Sphere as each of the five lords of the High Council declared themselves Star Lord. For 150 years, this precarious peace was challenged but never threatened, until the League was torn apart by treachery and murder. It was during this time that the Star League developed the first HPG (Hyper Pulse Generators) to allow for FTL communications, cutting average lag time between messages from Terra to the Periphery from one year to less than five months. The founding of the Star League in 2571 by the Cameron regime sparked the first Unification War when it ended in 2597, a period of relative peace began. Battlemechs became the standard instrument of war in this time of highly ritualised warfare. The years up to 2550 were marked by an almost continuous state of war under the peculiarities of the Ares Convention. The establishment of the Terran Hegemony as a substitute government sparked years of war.

With the collapse of the Terran Alliance in 2314, hostilites broke out across all civilised space. Over the next half century, Earth's population continued to plummet from emigration, and more than 1500 new planets were settled. In 2236, the colonies revolted against the sovereignity of Terra, and by 2242, Alliance holdings had shrunk to a sphere less than 60 light years across. As the costs of FTL travel came within reach of the average citizen, colonisation increased proportionately by 2235, there were 600 inhabited worlds.

Development of faster than light travel in 2108 launched a new era of interstellar colonisation.

By 2086, most of thw world's nations were part of the Western Alliance. Īfter the Western Alliance enforced world peace in 2014, the unification of Earth under one global banner was inevitable.
